Team Collaboration – the skill set that Humans are better than Robots
“It’s not easy to understand people cos humans are most complex…easier to handle machines…”
This was a comment in response to one of my previous articles: “Different Strokes for Different Folks”. I have to agree that it is easier for us to understand the machine’s mechanics and processes by reading its operation manual before handling one or being trained to handle one.
However, for any organizational goals to be achieved, team effort and collaboration is paramount. Humans being so complex are hard for most of us to figure out since we do not even understand ourselves at times. Thus, it would be great if we can utilize tools to help understand our make-up or the “operation manual” of ourselves and others.
“It takes all kinds to make the world but what is success to you may not be success to others.” Dr Morris Wo, CEO and Founder, Nobel Integrated Health Care (Malaysia)
“People don’t follow leaders who are not trust-worthy.” Mr. John Spakowski, Chairman & CEO, Pioneer Adhesives, Inc. (The Philippines)
“Leadership is about your ability to move an entire team rather than relying on several individuals. It’s about creating the effect of 1 + 1 = 5.” Mr. Benjamin Q. Avancena , CEO, OneAsia Healthcare Solutions Pte Ltd
These are quotes from leaders that I interviewed for the book: Effective Asian Leadership – Today and Tomorrow (Perspectives of 100 Leaders in Asia). Indeed, as human beings when we can overcome our biases, connect effectively with our team members and other stakeholders to achieve common goals, we will do significantly better than machines.
Ranked as one of the world’s Top 10 most influential thought leaders in leadership and organizational culture by Global Gurus, Mr. Arthur Carmazzi and his team started conducting research about the brain’s genetic process in getting clarity, termed the “Ambiguity Relief” process since 2002. The research identified how the brain’s clarity getting processes interpret the emotions of safety in groups. And this has been identified as one of the root causes of why trust and subsequently teamwork, fail.
In his LinkedIn article: Genetic Root causes of Teamwork and Trust Failure, Arthur and his team found during their research that our concept of “common sense” is largely a product of how our brain gets clarity, and when this differs from another person’s, we will end up having a process misalignment, in other words, people viewing from different lenses and perspectives. It is this misalignment that reduces our psychological safety, increases our fear and reduces our trust for others.
According to the research findings, the “Ambiguity Relief” clarity process determines how we process information in their progression and sequences in our brain thus resulting in us taking action in a way we feel most comfortable with.
How we get clarity determines how we approach a projects, relationships, ideas, learning, or even define our emotions and personal values. Because this clarity getting process is often different than someone we may work, or have a relationship with, it is frequently the cause of misunderstanding, unintentional disrespect, and a source of distrust….Arthur Carmazzi
