Leadership | Human Connection A Critical Skill Set Moving Forward
Honest communication is built on truth and integrity and upon respect of the one for the other. Benjamin E. Mays
Leadership with Human Connection – Integrity, Respect, and Trust, values that came up within the top ten to be an effective and successful leader in Asia. These are values brought up by leaders during our research and interview of the leaders for the book: Effective Asian Leadership: Today and Tomorrow (Perspectives of One Hundred Leaders In Asia)
“For leaders to lead in Asia, they must learn to respect relationships. It can’t be a cut and dry approach. To Asians, the form is very important.”
Mr. Joaquin E. Quintos IV, Snr VP, First Philippine Holdings Corporation.
As Mr. Quintos mentioned in the above quote, “form” is crucial in the Asian context. “Form” in this case refers to the importance of building a relationship from all aspects of communication. This refers to the building of a relationship at the get-go whether it is through email, messages, phone calls or when meeting face to face. Showing respect, humility, and empathy during our communication is crucial in building this “form”.
The value of “Human Connection and Understanding” has been brought up by almost every single leader we interviewed. There are two aspects of human connection that we can look at:
• Understanding others and their perspectives.
• Connecting, motivating, inspiring others to achieve their goals and maximize their potential. Both of these aspects require empathy, patience, the willingness to listen to others, recognition and rewarding appropriately.
A paragraph from the book: Effective Asian Leadership: Today and Tomorrow (Perspectives of One Hundred Leaders In Asia)
The importance of Human Connection has further been emphasized when the World Economic Forum1 rated People Management, Coordinating with Others and Emotional Intelligence as top skills moving forward in their report. Learn more about the top ten skills from a previous article: (PEOPLE MANAGEMENT | A SKILL SET CRUCIAL IN THE COMING OF INDUSTRY 5.0), these skill sets are crucial especially in the coming of Industry 5.0.
In our research for the book, whether it is a leader in a global company, a conglomerate, a small-medium enterprise or a not-for-profit organization, the way to get across to others, engage, motivate and inspire people towards a goal, is this leadership with a human connection.
However, in a world where we are always in a hurry and especially when we are inundated with emails, advertisements that seem to follow us everywhere we go, many of us take communication for granted. In the use of whatever media that is available to us (WhatsApp, Email, Messenger, SMS, Group Apps, etc) to convey ideas, messages, motivational quotes, etc to one another, we often don’t put much thought, attention or effort in the way we communicate. We may end up sounding curt or robotic. In a worst-case scenario, we could even unintentionally create misunderstanding and disagreements.
