Leadership From Within | 4 Ways Leadership Decisions Are Affected
Values are the foundations of our beliefs and one of the key reasons why we do the things we do.1
A leader’s values influence the way he leads, acts, makes decisions, communicates with and develops people. Even if an organisation has a set of core values, each leader will interpret these values from his lens which are shaped and guided by his values… an excerpt from the book titled: Effective Asian Leadership: Today and Tomorrow (Perspectives of One Hundred Leaders in Asia).
In a Forbes article2, values are described as being two-fold: that which is defined by an organisation as well as you as an individual.
Values at the organizational level serve to show both internal and external stakeholders what the organization is about. These values will influence the corporate culture.  Whereas the values of an individual will usually guide our decision making and behaviors.
Issues, complexities, and unhappiness arise when the values of the individual and the organisation’s are not aligned. This was further shown during the interviews with the leaders in Asia in the above-mentioned book. From the leaders that we’ve interviewed, we can identify the following ways in which their values affect their decisions and actions:
-
Give clarity in the choices and decisions that they make especially during a crisis.
-
Influence their passion, vision, career development, and people communication skills and methods.
-
Provide guidance on future directions for their leadership strategies.
-
Impact their people development, management and engagement strategies and action(s).
A strong brand with a clear brand DNA would help guide the values and actions of their leaders. It ensures that companies are brand centric and drive a culture led by brand. Leaders should represent their company’s brand so both should exemplify similar/aligned traits and values.  Jerome Joseph
